We (KSMA, Charleston Moves, Charleston Cycle Chic and EpicVu, LLC) are asking people in the Charleston, SC area if they'd be more likely to shop, dine and come to King Street if there were an event centered around closing the street for a day. We'd also like to hear from merchants about whether or not they think it would help or harm their business.

This is a popular trend in US Cities such as Ann Arbor, MI and Winter Park, FL... In fact, New York will be closing their streets to cars for three days in August - (72nd Street from Park Avenue to Fifth Avenue to link to Central Park) and made Time Square a car-free zone indefinitely.

For additional information about what other cities are doing please visit the KSMA Blog at http://www.ksma.wordpress.com

If King Street were closed to cars for a day - would you come out and shop/dine/walk/skate/ride/play music/celebrate?
  • Absolutely! I wish they would close it to cars frequently.
    66%
  • Sure. I go to King St regularly regardless of what's going on.
    11%
  • Maybe. If I have nothing better to do.
    7%
  • No. I'd rather be able to park next to where I shop and this sounds like a headache to me.
    6%
  • Merchant thinks it will help business
    6%
  • Merchant thinks it will harm business

NYC has just permanently closed Times Square to all car traffic. Two summers ago I had the opportunity to visit San Sebastion Spain, and it is truly one of the most incredble European cities I've ever been to. Practically every street and boulevard in the downtown historic district is closed to cars - it is like a giant pedestrian shopping mall with thriving restaurants and boutiques everywhwere. Something to consider for sure!

With all the construction on King Street in the last year, parts of it have practically been closed anyway. I think closing it down for a really fun reason is a great idea. Plus it will give the businesses an opportunity to "take to the street" and enjoy the fruits of all the recent construction labor and headache. After all the noise and dust, we need a quiet traffic-free day of shopping.

If we could fill the streets with something to encourage foot traffic, just like they do in NY, this could be a huge boost to downtown shopping. I think it's a wonderful idea and definitely something to consider.
